Things That Made Me Happy This Week - May 7, 2010

I haven’t done one of these posts in quite a while, and I think it’s about time to bring it back! So, without further ado….

• A lovely dinner at my mother-in-law and Lisa’s. Always fun hanging out with those two!
• We finished moving! Our new place is closer to both of our offices and is working out quite nicely.
• I finally completed work on Jone’s fundraising website www.FriendsofJone.com. Best of all, Wendie and Jone thought I did a good job!
• A wonderful phone conversation with the lovely Jone.
• Seeing so many people in Jone’s life looking for ways to give back to her and thank her for everything she’s done for them.
Trish received her case of Chobani from the contest and did great in her half marathon - 2nd woman overall - 1.26.34 - two seconds faster than last year.
Bob got his first paying photography gig! He was hired to take headshots of everyone on staff at my office, and did a great job :)
• I finally seem to be getting over this cold – sleeping at night is a good thing.
• A sweet note from Connie, checking in because she hadn’t heard from me in a while.
• Talked to my dad about creating a website for his restaurant. Looking forward to it!
• Discovering Great Harvest Bread Company. Oh my.

Some thoughts about my conversation with Jone:

We talked a bit about her lessons in all of this cancer chaos. One of those lessons for her, and for Wendie, is to learn to receive. Jone expressed to me just how overwhelming it’s been for her to experience such an outpouring of love and kindness. To me, it just makes sense. You spend your life giving and doing for others, it’s only natural that they will want to return the favor. I know Jone has not gone about her life thinking “well let me do this for this person because some day I will need them”. Of course not. She was just being herself. And that’s one of the many reasons she’s so loved – by me and so many others.

If you haven’t clicked on the link at the beginning of this post, now would be the time to do that. Or click this one:

www.FriendsofJone.com

It will bring you to our fundraising website, where there is more information on who Jone is, and how we can help her. Thanks for all your wonderful notes and kind wishes for Jone and her family. She told me she truly feels the love surrounding her, all the time.

  • We enjoyed a wonderful weekend in Oguinquit, ME.

  • My mother-in-law started a new, happier phase in her life

  • My brother is starting a new, healthier phase in his life

  • Bob joined a great new company, his business saw some real growth and he was awarded for his efforts at the end of the year by the owners.

  • Because of our hard work, we paid off a lot of debt and were able to purchase some items that we needed to replace. We were also able to make some donations. Anyone who knows how we’ve struggled the last few years, knows what a big deal all this is for us. My husband is proof that hard work, compassion and persistence pay off.

  • We went to - and fell in love with - San Diego

  • I learned some things from each of my friends – about their lives, and about life in general. And I feel honored that they have shared so much with me.

  • Bob and I officially have a new hobby to enjoy together… photography is so interesting, and so much fun!

  • We enjoyed a lot of New England-y, Rhode Island-y things: The Newport Winter Festival, Iggy’s, apple picking, Pawtuxet Village Arts and Crafts Fair, Jack-O’Lantern Spectacular, Al Forno

  • My company moved into a new, beautiful new office suite

  • I got some really great news at work about some new business coming in, which means tons more growth and exciting new challenges.

  • I got to deliver bonuses to my staff… so much fun!

  • We celebrated my birthday with a weekend in Boston

At the beginning of 2009, Bob sat down with one of the owners of his company to make a list of goals for the year. Recently, he found his list and was so happy to see that he actually achieved everything on it. I know how good that made him feel - to actually see it in writing.

So, I'm taking a page out of his book and making my own list for 2010. These are not resolutions; rather an outline of what I want this year to look like for me personally. How exciting will it be to come back and look at it again at the end of the year and see I've accomplished what's on it?

Things I Hope to Accomplish in 2010

  • Learn some new stuff – pottery, drawing, jewelry making, sushi making

  • Get better at photography and Photoshop. Perhaps get my own digital SLR.

  • Get a new (to us) car

  • More blog writing

  • More focus on health – shed pounds, become more flexible, incorporate yoga

  • Attend the Realtor convention again – this time in New Orleans !

  • More hiking

  • More travel

So 2009 was a pretty great year for me personally. I'm so appreciative of every wonderful moment.

Unfortunately, for some people close to me, it wasn't so great. I'm fond of saying that you can basically just choose to be happy or productive or successful. And I do believe that to be the case most of the time... especially when it comes to personal relationships. But sometimes, crappy stuff just happens. Some crappy stuff has happened to some people I love this year. I guess the Universe has to throw you a doozy now and then.

My hope for all of us is that 2010 is full of love, fun, success and peace.

I'm Back!!

I've neglected my poor blog, but my dear friends Wendie and Connie have inspired me to get back into the swing of things. Wendie made a huge leap and resigned from her post as weekday editor of a celebrity gossip website to focus more on her own website, Mommytopia, and her book. Yup, I'm friends with a professional writer. Connie started her blog today... get this... ThreeLittleBirdsAndMe.com. Is that the cutest ever? Her first post brought me to tears and I'm so looking forward to reading more. The best part is that I'm having dinner with both of them tomorrow night, and they are meeting each other for the first time! It will be fun... a seasoned writer and one trying out her voice for the first time... lots to talk about.

So... here's what's been going on, for the three of you that are interested...

At the beginning of November, the company I work for moved into a beautiful new office. Our new place accomodates our growing staff very well. It's two floors and 8500 square feet of gorgeousness. My own office is coming together quite nicely :)

When I started working for this company 12 years ago, we were very small company. The number of employees has now quadrupled in size. Lots of changes come with growth, and it's been exciting to have been a part of it... I'm proud of what I've personally accomplished... having starting as a temporary part-time receptionist, my title is now Director of Communications and I have a kick ass staff of 3 to supervise. I'm also very proud in general of what we do here.

My company is an Employee Assistance Program. We provide free counseling to the employees of our client companies. So, if you work for one of our client companies, and you need someone to talk to... about parenting, work related issues, family issues, whatever... you would call us and speak to one of our amazing counselors, or you would see one of them face to face, depending on what type of contract your company has with us. The company I work for literally changes lives.

We also went to San Diego! Bob and several people from his company attended the National Association of Realtors convention and I got to go!! It was a quick visit, but we did get to the San Diego Zoo (see my friend Mr. Gorilla, at the top of the page), La Jolla, Torrey Pines and Hotel Del Coronado (that's us in the picture above on the beach there). I'm in love with San Diego... the west coast in general, really. The best part of this trip was that Karen and Rich were there!! Rich is a Realtor and attended the convention with Bob... and Karen and I got to spend a lot of quality time together. It was such a great time, and I'm so happy we did it. We talked about doing this every year... meeting up at the convention, wherever it may be. Next year it's in New Orleans! This is me and Karen in La Jolla.

Oh yeah... and I've been sick-twice. The first time was the week of the office move. Cough, cold stuff. The second time, last week, it was the flu. I don't think it was H1N1, because I didn't have respiratory stuff, but it knocked me out for sure. I feel way better now, and ready for the holiday season!

Meanwhile, it turns out my husband is an awesome photographer. Seriously... I'm so impressed... check this out

I asked him to take three gerber daisy pictures for the wall in my office. I wanted a red, an orange and a yellow. He totally made it happen. See the iPhone picture above of my office... doesn't that look cool against the chocolate brown wall? Since I brought these prints in, he's been asked to take some more pictures for other spots in the office suite. He's been bitten in a big way and I really can't wait to see what the future holds.
So that's it! Lots of fun stuff coming up...
  • Dinner tomorrow night with the girls
  • Holiday Pet Bazaar on Saturday
  • Stand Up for Animals Comedy Showcase to benefit the Providence Animal Rescue League, sponsored by Bob's company, Williams & Stuart Real Estate next Friday
  • My birthday is coming up next week! The mister is whisking me away to Boston for a night... so exciting!

Things That Made Me Happy This Week - November 1, 2009

  • A day of apple picking, picture taking, hiking and pie making with the mister.
  • Straight hair for a few days, courtesy of my favorite hair stylist.
  • A fantastic meal with Wendie at Bacaro. Fantastic food, fantastic company.
  • A really fun Halloween party.
  • A date with my groom at Cuban Revolution followed by a double feature!
  • Beginning the process of packing up my office in preparation for the move next weekend.
  • This mushroom risotto recipe.
  • A great photo shoot at home with Erika for Bob's new headshot, followed by some quality time with her and an appearance by Julie!
I had a great week! Lots of stuff was accomplished at work, and I still managed to have a ton of fun. Both of those things don't happen simultaneously very often, so I'm appreciating the heck out of it.

The week began with a fun day out with Bob at Sweet Berry Farm, picking apples and taking pictures. They had a ton of apples left to pick, so we ended up making a couple of pies that night. After apple picking, we headed to Norman Bird Sanctuary for a short hike. This place has some meaning for us because it's where we went on our first hike together. We got some great pictures there too!

Wednesday night, I met up with Wendie for a phenomenal meal at Bacaro. The food was wonderful, and the conversation even better. I've been seeing a lot more of her lately, and it makes me happy :)

Oh! And Bob surprised me with tickets to see Ray Lamontagne! I tell ya, I did something right somewhere along the way.

The end of the work week consisted of a lot of work leaving my desk, and the beginning stages of packing up for our move next weekend. We're moving to a beautiful new office space and we're all very excited. It's going to be a long weekend, but worth it.

Friday night, we went to the annual Halloween party of our friends', Josh and Kristine. I was looking forward to spending some time with Connie and Carolyn, and I'm so happy that I got to. :) It is required that guests dress up for this party, and dress up we did. I was Khloe Kardashian (that's me on the left), and Bob was my paparazzi! The best costume by far was our friends Derek and Lisa, who dressed as solar panels and a wind turbine. So creative, and hilarious.

Saturday, Bob and I had a date at the Cuban Revolution, followed by a double feature! We saw "Law Abiding Citizen" and "Zombieland". Both very different, very good movies. I was pleasantly surprised by both.

Today (Sunday), we went out to breakfast, then spent a few hours cleaning the house. Erika came over for lunch, then proceeded to spend HOURS with Bob on his new headshot. He has a goatee in his other one and it was time for something new. We had seen Erika's work and were really impressed, and she did not disappoint. I think she got some really great shots of Bob :)

Julie arrived at the tail end of the photo shoot, when Erika was taking shots of Gruxy (can't wait to see those!!) and we had a nice visit with the both of them. We subjected both of them to the wedding video, and they said they didn't mind... heh.

Days like this, I really just feel so fortunate. Life is what you make of it.

Things That Made Me Happy This Week - Sept 13, 2009

  • Making progress finalizing some projects at work before we leave
  • Bob had a great time at his bachelor party
  • Engagement party thrown by my co-workers
  • Glee (If you haven't seen this show, you're missing out. Hilarious!)
  • A night out with some of my favorite girls on the planet
  • Sangria
  • We were able to leave Gruxy overnight without worry - he was so happy to see Auntie Luisa!
  • A lovely pre-wedding celebration lunch with Bob’s mom and brother at 22 Bowen's in Newport
  • A stop at Green Envy to stock up on Soy Candles by Phebes
  • Bob went into contract on a new property
It's been a week filled with pre-wedding stuff. We leave early on Thursday morning, so we're really wrapping up stuff that needs to be done, and we've been treated to a lot of fun in between!

Bob's bachelor party was last Sunday. He and the guys played golf, ate BBQ and went to a cigar bar. Basically, the perfect day for him :)

My company threw us an engagement party on Wednesday after work. We went to a restaurant near my office for appetizers and cocktails. We had fun.... a lot of laughs, and it was great hearing about how people met their spouses, and some interesting traditions that some couples have adopted for their anniversaries.

On Saturday, after dropping Gruxy off for his sleepover with Auntie Lu, we took Bob's mom and brother out for a pre-departure celebration lunch. We had a wonderful, leisurely meal in Newport and then walked around a bit.

Some of my best girls took me out that night. I hesitate to call it a bachelorette party because for me, that phrase conjures up images of bride t-shirts, male strippers and intoxication. This was not that, at all. My wonderful friends planned a dinner at the gorgeous One Bellevue at The Hotel Viking. When Bob walked with me into the lounge where live jazz was playing, I was greeted by three sweet, smiling faces and big hugs. Bob stayed just long enough to get his own hugs, then took off for a night at the movies. After a few minutes, the last of the girls arrived and we headed into the dining room for dinner.

Our server, Andrew, was very attentive and charming. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals and great conversation and laughs. After dinner, some of us headed over to Salvation Cafe where we shared a jar of sangria. We sat outside under a canopy, and even though it was raining and my hair was not happy, I was. I feel so grateful to have these women in my life. These are people who are genuinely happy for me, love Bob and love us together. I'm really feeling the love this week! :)

This picture cracks me up... I'm trying to look all cute, Luisa (on the right) is in mid-sentence but stops to pose, and Julie is just laughing hysterically at Luisa's story.

I know my posts have been a bit few and far between lately and I hope you forgive me... but the weddingmoon is here... and I'll be back afterwards with some great pictures. I have some product reviews lined up, too.

See you in a couple of weeks!

  • Watching the sunrise over the ocean with my Love
We got up at 5am today! Anyone who knows me, knows... this is unheard of, unless I have a plane to catch. But I had this bright idea that it might be cool to watch the sunrise and practice with the new camera.

Actually, it was a great idea... on a holiday weekend during the day, Brenton Point in Newport, RI is super crowded. But this morning we were joined only by seagulls, fishermen and other photographers. Some professional, some amateur, like us (I realize amateur is an understatement, but we’re learning ok?).

So I bundled up in my blanket while Bob set up the tripod. We watched the sunrise, took pictures and cuddled. There is something about the sound of the ocean that’s just so soothing. I realized something about myself a few years ago... I don’t think I would be happy living in a place where the ocean was not easily accessible. I visited Boulder, CO once and although it’s gorgeous... I just don’t think I’d be happy there for an extended period of time.

Brenton Point is one of “our” spots... we like to bring a picnic lunch and just lay in the grass listening to the waves. It’s beautiful and it doesn’t cost a penny. What’s your favorite spot?

Things That Made Me Happy This Week - Aug 29, 2009

  • A good belly laugh with Julie and Luisa
  • My wedding band is ready!
  • A visit to the vet - Dave’s a healthy and happy boy :)
  • A compliment on this blog from a Facebook friend and old classmate
  • Being able to pick up the phone and get great advice
  • It cooled down.... it’s been sticky up here in the Northeast
  • Overhearing a conversation another bride-to-be was having with a friend...
I'm happy I overheard this conversation because it just confirmed for me that we're doing the right thing for us with this wedding (getting married on the beach in Aruba - just the two of us!). This bride actually said "I think I'm the most miserable bride-to-be ever". She then went on to talk about seating charts, her bridal shower (which she hated), family drama, china...

I had a similar experience about a month ago when I went into a bridal shop to pick up an accessory for my dress. The two women standing there in their beautiful wedding dresses were bitching.... one of them about how her fiance screwed up the ring, the other about her fiance's family.

Although I was happy to know I personally made a good decision for ME, it makes me sad to realize that these women were so stressed out and didn't seem to be enjoying this time in their lives. I understand that lots of women want The Wedding. The dress, wedding party, the big cake, the favors, the flowers... I do understand, because I did it all the first time around (I was 20, and it was very short-lived). And perhaps I don't need it anymore because I've done it and remember how stressful it was. Perhaps I would feel differently now if I hadn't been through it before... I don't know.

But that was 16 years ago and since then it seems like the whole business of wedding planning has gotten so much more over the top since then. If you've ever seen the TV show, "Masters of Reception", you know what I mean. I've seen people drop tens of thousands of dollars... for ONE DAY. Going into debt... for ONE DAY.

Of course being engaged and getting married is a special time and I think it's important to make it as meaningful and memorable as possible. I just feel like so much of this stuff is done for the guests, and not the couple. And... are the guests REALLY going to remember what your favors were, what the food was, what kind of limo you had? No... they will remember whether they had fun or not, how happy you were, and how beautiful the bride looked. And brides look beautiful on their wedding day. Whether the dress was $10,000 from a high end bridal boutique or $50 from a consignment shop.

  • More stuff checked off of Mr To Do
  • Finishing the redesign on Bob’s new website
  • Presenting a new idea at work and having it approved. Excited for a new project!
  • Learning about Bach’s Rescue Remedy from Trish. For a great post on Bach's, click here
  • Giant, side-splitting, tear producing laugh with Bob
  • Finding out about Wendie's quote in The Atlantic. Congratulations, Wendie! And Happy Birthday!
  • New camera!!
A few words about the new camera….

You may ask… Melissa, how is a new camera “less complicated”? Was your old one broken? No, the old one wasn't broken. In fact, we will continue to use it. There are several reasons for this purchase:

Bob and I both blog a lot. We take pride in the pictures we post and we want them to be the best they can be.

We’ve both become very interested in photography in the last couple of years and were ready to take the next step in our education. In order to learn about things like aperture, composition, ISO… we need a camera where we can actually adjust those things. A point and shoot won’t allow for that.

Photography makes you do things you may not normally do… go places you may not normally go… at times you may not normally go. Wendie says that the best light is sunrise and sunset. I wouldn’t normally go to a beach at sunrise, but if I know I might get a great shot… I’m much more willing.

Digital photography is a fairly inexpensive hobby. Once you’ve purchased the equipment, the only expense is gas money to get you to your location. Of course, the possibilities are endless in terms of lenses, filters, software etc. But those items can be purchased used or refurbished for less money.

Sharing a hobby is a great way for a couple to bond.

We’re going on vacation to a beautiful place in less than a month… we want to take beautiful photographs to remember our honeymoon!

So, after putting a lot of thought and research into it, we got ourselves the Canon EOS Rebel XS. So far, we’re loving it! I find it a bit intimidating but I'm excited to learn all about it.

Here is an unedited picture taken with the Kodak Easy Share point and shoot on the close up setting:

Things That Made Me Happy This Week - Aug 16 2009

  • Spending the whole day with my guy on Saturday - work free!
  • Finding (and loving) Gruxy's new vet
  • Watermelon
  • Another great session with Gruxy's wonderful trainer, Erika (that's her in the picture above)
  • Dinner and DVDs with Julie (that's her with the boy in the picture below)
  • Learning of Kelli Campellone's Best of RI Editor's Choice Award
  • A very sweet email from Bob's mom
  • Plaid and Stripe pet shop in Providence

Gruxy's a ladies man. It's true... he has two girlfriends. I didn't know how to tell them about each other, so I thought maybe if I just posted the pictures here they'd put two and two together. I'm sorry ladies... he's kind of a player.

Just a few mushy moments here, if you don't mind indulging me...

3 1/2 years ago when I met Bob, I was a somewhat traumatized soul when it comes to mothers-in-law. Not that I'd been married a bunch of times, but former boyfriends did have mothers and let's just say... the relationships were a bit of a challenge. The one that stands out the most was a very judgmental, intrusive woman who just saw life completely differently than I did. We just didn't see eye to eye. It made life difficult and once the relationship was over, I was left feeling a bit... well, traumatized.

Bob kept telling me his mother was different, she was so great... non judgmental, open, loving, supportive, not intrusive... of course I thought to myself "sure, they all think their mothers are perfect". I was not ready to meet her, though he wanted me to fairly quickly. I met her a couple of months after we met...

From the moment I met Laura, and every moment since, she has been open, kind, warm, supportive... all the things Bob said she was. She never misses an opportunity to tell me how happy she is that Bob met me, and to thank me for making him so happy. The email she sent me this week is not unusual... I've received many emails like it from Laura over the past few years. I feel like the lucky one... I'm marrying into a wonderful family. Laura's best friend Lisa is a big part of our lives as well, and she's every bit as loving and supportive. And Bob's brother Justin... basically a younger version of Bob. A great guy, and a great brother to Bob.

In just over a month, I will marry the man of my dreams. There are times when I wish we had met earlier in life, so that we could have more time together, but then I realize that if we had met earlier, we may not appreciate what we have. And I'm so thankful for what we have.

Things That Made Me Happy This Week - Aug 8 2009

  • Skyping with my brother in Iraq
  • Caprese with balsamic and our own basil
  • Discovering the blog Man vs Debt
  • Booking our San Diego trip
  • Lunch with Wendie
  • Contributing to a successful presentation at work
  • Receiving my wedding dress
  • Spending time getting to know a new friend a little better
  • Holding new friend’s baby
  • Seeing Bob hold new friend’s baby
  • Compliments on my new hair, when I was feeling unsure about it (compliment came from a friend who says nothing if she has nothing nice to say so I know she really did like it!)
  • Finally catching up with a very busy friend in CT
  • The really good laugh I shared with Bob at lunch yesterday

So... this is an interesting list. Here’s what I see when I look at it: I’m most happy when spending time with people I love and accomplishing tasks. Huh.

A few words about the blog Man vs Debt...

I’m so fascinated by this family’s decision to just get rid of everything they own and move to another country. This was a couple that was in serious debt. They made a decision to get out of it, save money, sell everything except what they could fit into backpacks, and move to Australia with their baby. And they did! Along the way, they changed the destination to New Zealand, but they totally did it.

I have increasingly felt this desire to be less tethered by “stuff”, which is one of the things that has led me to want a less complicated life. When we moved into this house, we put boxes in the basement that we haven’t looked in since. Do we need that stuff? Seriously?

I just had a conversation with my brother about this very subject. He has the travel bug for sure, and wants to see the world. Fortunately for him he has a job where he can do that. Not so fortunately, right now he’s in a war zone. But at age 26, he’s been to several states, Dubai, Spain and of course, Iraq. He doesn’t have much interest in collecting things. I told him that a friend of mine says “own your stuff, don’t let your stuff own you”. He thought it was great... and I realized my friend may have gotten it from somewhere so I Googled it and turns out it’s from the movie Fight Club:

“You buy furniture. You tell yourself this is the last sofa I will ever need in my life. Buy the sofa, then for a couple of years you’re satisfied that no matter what goes wrong, at least you’ve got your sofa issue handled. Then the right set of dishes. Then the perfect bed. The drapes. The rug. Then you’re trapped in your lovely nest, and the things you used to own... now they own you."

Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club (1996)

Now listen, I’m not saying I don’t appreciate new technology or like nice jewelry. In fact, we recently got a new Mac. The idea I think is to really consider your needs. In our case, Bob really does need a good computer for work, and we both obviously blog a lot so we need to be able to do it frustration free. But out of necessity, we used the same crappy laptop for 2 years before we had the money to get this laptop, and when we bought it, we researched to death what the best investment would be for us. I also think technology that helps cut down on things that take up space is really great too... think iPod, Kindle, etc.

I’m also not saying that there isn’t value to having a comfortable home - especially if you have kids. There is a lot to be said for stability. I think it’s cool when people go “home for the holidays” and sleep in the bedroom they grew up in. Or take their spouse to the ice cream place they used to go to as a kid.

I just think it’s so amazing when people make the decision to be free of stuff and embark on an adventure like Adam and his family did. In my opinion it takes a lot of courage and I really admire them.

So there has to be some sort of “In Between” for people like me, who maybe aren’t ready to make that drastic of a change, but who want to be less “trapped”. I continue to try to find the balance.

“Take a look again

Take a look again

Things you have collected

Well, in the end it all piles up so tall

To one big nothing

One big nothing at all”

~"Seek Up" by The Dave Matthews Band
